Riccardo Cotarella is one of the most famous and appreciate oenologist in Italy. His consulenze is request from a lot of companies, in Italy and otherwise. Thanks to his experience, his professionality, his knowledge of the territory and his capacity to create great and elegance wines. He has a lot of influence on the decision on the wine.
Riccardo Cotarella was born in the village of Monterubiaglio, province of Terni in 1948.
He obtains the oenologist diploma twenty years later and then creates, with his brother Renzo, general director of Antinori, the Falesco winery to recover the native vines of the territory. His civic commitment is shown in the teaching of oenology at the University of Tuscia, in the formation of the young people of San Patrignano and in the participation in the “Wine for life” project of the Community of Sant’Egidio. He is courageous to change his mind publicly, as in the case of sulfites. Cotarella has a WRT – Wine Research Team project for the production of excellent wines without sulfites in 25 wineries.
In February 2011 he received, from the University of Tuscia of Viterbo, the honorary degree in Agriculture for “his contribution to technical and scientific progress in the fields of viticulture and oenology”. He was entrusted with a “mission impossible” with the presidency of the Wine Committee of Expo 2015.
His main activity is that of a consultant with prestigious clients all over Italy. He is said to be a consultant to Berlusconi and Clooney but he is definitely the winemaker of Massimo D’Alema and Bruno Vespa. The election as president of the worldwide winemakers, is an honor for him and for all Italian wine, but above all it is an opportunity to start again, to make it despite the crisis, to believe it and move on.
The decision to rely on an oenologist of a considered experience, such as Cotarella, corresponds to the maturity reached by the Donnachiara company, which has now reached ten years and is ready to express its philosophy even more by focusing on excellence, and demonstrates the desire to improve and grow, with a significant increase in quality and an increase in its prestige.
Over the years, the company has deemed it appropriate to intervene with investments in research and development, aimed at creating innovations in products and processes that would ensure a repositioning on higher (perceived) quality levels. In fact, as is widely acknowledged, one of the problems of Campania wine is the lack of marketing policies to support the strategic choices made.
The entry of the oenologist Cotarella, to the technical management of the company has already produced consequences in terms of Brand Building and perceived prestige of the Donnachiara Brand.
The company has recently been included with the Irpinia Aglianio doc 2013 at number 6 of the prestigious international ranking annually compiled by the American critic James Suckling of the 50 best wines in the world under $ 50. In addition, the flagship red wine “Taurasi di Umberto docg 2012” has been awarded the prestigious highest award conferred by the English magazine DECANTER with the platinum medal as “Best red wine of southern Italy”
